5/29-6/2
True to the constant busyness of my life, I found myself
packing on Thursday, for my trip to San Diego without having completed any of
the short runs on my training schedule. It made me a little nervous, but I
reminded myself that these runs were to keep me loose and moving, but mostly
they were put in place for a sanity check. It’s easy to get going on a run and
“panic” that you can’t do it because you haven’t gone for any runs in the last
week or so, but even a 2 mile or 20 minute run is going to keep your mind out
of that place. I decided to swing the kettlebell for a while I took a break
from packing. That got my heart rate up and loosened up some muscles for me
without putting in a running workout. I decided that’s probably all I really
needed, since I’ve been doing plenty of walking around and up and down the
ladder all week.
Friday I got picked up from the airport and then we spent
some time walking around Seaport Village before heading to packet pick up and
walking around the expo. I decided all that walking was more than sufficient to
skip my final 20 minute run. I didn’t want to over-do anything before Sunday.
Sunday morning came, and I was feeling a little nervous, but
also pretty confidant and ready to run. By the time the race started I was
feeling pretty antsy. My corral was finally released and I got a little
emotional – I was just so excited and proud of myself that I had done the
training and was finally there, on the course, running in my first half marathon. I didn’t have a time goal, except to finish before they started
picking up the stragglers. I more than exceeded that goal, as I sprinted
through the downhill finish line for a 3:19:43 official time!
