6/3/-6/9
I took it pretty easy this week. Monday I relaxed and hung
out with family before flying home and I let Tuesday and Wednesday be
additional recovery days, although I didn’t feel like I needed it on Wednesday.
Thursday I went to kettlebell with Kyndall and on the way home she said “let’s
not do that again tonight!” so I said “ok, let’s go for a run, instead!” I
thought for sure she would say no way, but she asked how far instead. I told
her I was kidding but if she wanted to pick a distance, I’d run with her. So we
got home, changed into running shoes and went for a 1 mile run. It actually
felt pretty good. I was a little worried that after kettlebell I wasn’t going
to have the strength to really go for it but we finished in 13:15. Not too bad!
When I got home from San Diego, I was a little worried about
stepping on the scale. I didn’t eat horribly, but I didn’t eat well either. My
biggest downfall: sodium. I didn’t watch that intake at all, so I knew the
scale would be up when I stepped on Tuesday morning. Sure enough, I was up 4 lbs
since Thursday morning. Granted, some of that is definitely water weight
between the sodium in the food in addition to the Gatorade I drank during the
run, after the run and again on Monday. Fortunately, it was already down 2 of those pounds by
Friday morning.
Thursday night, we had a discussion with the kids about the
Slacker Half Marathon and 4 Miler coming up at the end of this month. Caleb and
Lily have gotten derailed from their training, and although I’m confident that
they could build it back up enough to successfully complete the half marathon
in 3 weeks, they aren’t so sure. Because of our 2 week vacation time with the
other kids as well, we now have all 6 kids so I suggested that we create relay
teams. The race has a 3 person relay team option to break up the entire half
marathon course, and the kids really liked that idea. So it looks like we will
have 3 teams pairing up (with my final approval to ensure we have an adult at
each of the start points to assist with the transitions). The distances are a
little weird to me, but there wasn’t any arguing about who got to or had to do
each of the 6, 3, and 4 mile distances.
Another cool thing that came up this week is that I have
some co-workers who felt inspired by my accomplishment and have decided to also
start running and want to do a race. They had mentioned it Thursday before I left, but I didn’t put a
whole lot of stock in it. People have said things like that before and nothing
has come of it. When I got to work Tuesday, there was an email about getting a
group together to participate in the Equinox Half Marathon and 5 Miler coming
up in September. Apparently there are already 7 people (including 2 spouses)
that are talking about participating. I wasn’t planning on doing another half
marathon so soon, but it looks like now I’m going to have to!
Saturday we went out and finally got new bikes for me and Lily. Lily has outgrown hers and I had one I didn't like so I gave it to Ian when he needed something bigger last summer. I really want to biking to work a few times a week, so obviously I needed to get a bike to ride! Jerry and I took the kids out for a bike ride Saturday evening so Lily and I could get used to our new bikes and so I could get a feel for the course and time I'd need to plan for, for riding to work. Going slow and stopping a lot (because of Lily) it only took 35 minutes to go the 4 miles to my work. I won't be going that slow alone so I'm glad to see it's not going to take me very long to get to work by bike. Now let's just hope it doesn't cause knee pain - the other reason I took so long to go get a bike I like.
1 Mile Ran, 9 miles biked; 4lbs gained & 2 lbs lost
