Although my training has really been lacking, I was feeling really good about this race. I woke up, eager, and feeling physically really well. Finally! My goal wasn't a PR (I knew I wasn't ready for that yet) but to come in under 50 minutes - a significant improvement over The Purple Stride.
When I told my sister and SIL my goal, Kelsey told me hers was to keep up with me and Kimberly said hers was to beat me :)
The race started late, which was frustrating, and then it was really crowded so we had to walk pretty far before we could even have room to spread out and run. We weren't off to a very good start, but I wasn't going to get discouraged. Plus I had my sister with me, needing my motivation because she hadn't been training at all. We got into a run/walk/run routine and every time we started to catch up to Kimberly (still not sure how she got ahead of us in the crowd with a stroller), she'd take off. We had a lot of fun bouncing around to my music and pushing each other as we needed it.
I didn't end up pushing myself as hard as I should have, but I decided to stick with my sister and help her through it when she really started to struggle. I knew if I left her behind, she'd walk the rest and I knew she could and wanted to do better than that.
After we crossed the 3 mile mark, she was done and pretty determined to walk in the last tenth of a mile with her boyfriend who back tracked to find us after he finished. I didn't have a whole lot left but when I saw the finish line, I gave it one last push and sprinted across.
Gun Time: 49:31
Run Keeper Time: 47:38
I'm good with that :)
