My Journey - Week 43

3/26 - 4/1
With my 5 mile race, I was really hoping to get some running in to train for it, but I didn't do any until Saturday, and then we only planned a short, easy run to make sure we didn't make ourselves sore for Sunday. It was a good thing we did it though, because my mom helped me figure out a solution to my ankle pains. I figured out that it was happening on side to side slopes. So when the path is angled and my left foot is lower than my right or the other way around, my ankles start to really hurt bad. This seems to happen mostly on uphill stretches. We took a tip from one of my recent Wanda Whoopin's where she had me run backwards up the hill in her back yard. It was an awesome work out, and it used totally different muscles. Mom had the idea that if I turned around and ran uphill backwards if my ankles started hurting that maybe it would shift the muscle usage and ease that pain. It worked! I started feeling the pain and turned around until it stopped hurting. Definitely a useful tip, because when I got about a half of a mile into my 5 mile race, I started feeling that ankle pain... I got some weird looks from the other runners, but I did turn around and run backwards for a stretch to relieve the pain. I'm very excited about this finding!
